About this tool
Grade Point Average (GPA) is the weighted academic performance index used by universities and colleges worldwide to summarise a student's academic standing across a semester or full degree programme. Most institutions operate on a 4.0-point scale, where letter grades map to fixed numerical point values.
Weighted GPA Formula
The GPA is computed as a credit-weighted average across all enrolled courses:
Where:
- Grade Points is the numeric value assigned to the letter grade (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0).
- Credits (also called credit hours or unit weight) is the load assigned to the course, typically ranging from 1 to 6.
CGPA vs Semester GPA
The Cumulative GPA (CGPA) applies this same formula across all semesters and all enrolled courses to date — not just the current term. To calculate your CGPA, simply enter all your courses across all semesters into the matrix above and the result represents your full cumulative standing.
All calculations occur inside your browser with no data ever sent to a server, keeping your academic records private.
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about GPA & CGPA Calculator.
What grading scale does the GPA calculator use?
The default scale uses the standard US 4.0 GPA system (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0) with +/- modifiers (A+ = 4.0, A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.). You can switch to the UK percentage scale or custom scales used by your institution.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is the average for a single semester or academic term. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) averages all courses across all semesters to date, weighted by credit hours. The calculator computes both, allowing you to track per-semester performance and your overall academic standing.
How does the calculator handle courses with different credit hours?
Each course's grade is multiplied by its credit hours to produce quality points. GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours. A 3-credit course has three times the weight of a 1-credit course. The calculator shows the quality points breakdown for each course.
What GPA is typically required for graduate school admission?
Requirements vary widely by programme. Most US graduate programmes expect a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B average), with competitive programmes at top universities expecting 3.5+. STEM doctoral programmes often have higher expectations. Always check the specific requirements of each programme you are applying to.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA across multiple semesters?
Add all semesters' entries (with their respective credit hours and grades) to the calculator. It sums quality points and credit hours across all terms and divides to produce your CGPA. You can also enter previous cumulative totals from your transcript and add just the new semester.
