About this tool
Every major social platform imposes strict character limits and prioritises "above-the-fold" content — the text visible before a reader taps "See More." This utility gives you a unified copywriting dashboard that tracks all the metrics that matter in real time.
Platform Character Limits
- X / Twitter: 280 characters
- LinkedIn Post: 3,000 characters
- Instagram Caption: 2,200 characters
- TikTok Description: 2,200 characters
- Facebook Post: 63,206 characters
- YouTube Description: 5,000 characters
Hook Analysis
The first sentence of any post determines whether a reader stops scrolling. Research consistently shows that opening hooks under 80 characters receive substantially higher engagement rates. This tool scores your opening line and previews the exact first 125 characters that appear before the "See More" fold on most platforms.
All processing is 100% client-side — your draft text never leaves your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about Social Media Character & Hook Counter.
Which social media platforms does the character counter support?
Twitter/X (280 chars), LinkedIn (3,000 chars for posts, 1,300 for comments), Instagram (2,200 chars), TikTok (2,200 chars), Facebook (63,206 chars), and YouTube (5,000 chars for descriptions). Each platform's limit is enforced and displayed with a remaining characters indicator.
How does the counter handle emoji in character limits?
Emoji are correctly counted based on their Unicode code point size, not their visual width. Most emoji are 2 characters in Twitter's count (because they use 2 UTF-16 code units). The counter uses the same algorithm as each platform's official character counting API.
Why do Twitter and LinkedIn count URLs differently from plain text?
Twitter wraps all URLs (regardless of length) in their t.co shortener, which always counts as 23 characters. LinkedIn similarly normalises URLs. The counter handles this correctly — paste a long URL and it will count as the platform-specific normalized length, not the raw character count.
What is a copywriting hook and how does the hook detector work?
A hook is the opening sentence or statement designed to capture attention and compel someone to keep reading. The hook analyser scans your opening line for proven patterns: curiosity gaps, contrarian statements, bold claims, questions, numbers, and emotional triggers — rating their likely engagement potential.
Does the counter save or store my social media copy?
No. All text analysis runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is saved, logged, or sent to any server. Your copywriting drafts remain private.
